American Cheese

May is American Cheese Month, and now more than ever it’s important to support our American artisans. Many producers have suffered a loss in sales because the restaurants they sell to have closed or are working at a much smaller capacity. Because of this and cheese’s perishability, American producers need our help buying their specialty goods.

Pleasant Ridge Reserve from Uplands Cheese

Uplands Cheese in Wisconsin makes two seasonal grass-fed cow’s milk cheeses. The farmers practice rotational grazing, which ensures that the cows are eating fresh grass from spring to fall and that their 300 acres of land aren’t over grazed. Pleasant Ridge Reserve is their summer cheese. This golden beauty is a raw milk, alpine in style that’s aged up to two years. It’s nutty, savory, and deserving of its title as the most-awarded American cheese.

Central Coast Creamery’s Goat Gouda

Goat Gouda is made by Central Coast Creamery in Paso Robles, California. After working the dairy industry for nearly 30 years, Reggie and Kellie Jones opened Central Coast in 2012. Today they make eight cheeses using cow, goat and sheep milk. Their Goat Gouda is a semi-firm cheese with a caramel sweetness and a creamy mouth feel. It pairs well with beer, wine and a front porch.

Olympia Provisions smoked kielbasa, frankfurters and other sausages

Growing up with his father’s homemade charcuterie, Elias Cairo ventured to Europe to study. He fell back in love with old school practices and started Olympia Provisions in 2009. The USDA-inspected Portland salumeria uses only antibiotic free pork, sea salt and fresh spices. Their cured meats age naturally and slowly in natural casings. We recently stocked up on their bratwurst, Italian sausage, smoked kielbasa, and pork frankfurters.
